Wooha!  Wake up in snowbound Madison; at work by 10:30 in mild Albuquerque!

Naive easterner ruins Albuquerque moment

It was going to be a perfect Albuquerque moment.  Thousands of drivers navigating Tramway to work in the morning were going to sneer when they saw the message, posted in styrofoam cups mashed into the diamond links on an overhead footbridge: "LOVE 2 [expletive starting with 'F']."  Apparently, some free-speech-excercising youths had hauled a large pack of cups to the bridge in the middle of the night, and carefully plotted their message for the intellectual betterment of the morning commute.  Such flourishes of wisdom and creativity one finds in most cities only in museums.  But here in the Quirk, the human spirit finds expression not only in such rigid confines, but in the more common surroundings: the bathroom stall, the storm-arroyo pavement, the pedestrian overpass.

Unfortunately, however, commuters were not the only ones discovering the message in the early pre-dawn hours.   While the pink fingers of dawn had only barely crept over the mountaintops, a shivering morning runner started across the bridge, pausing momentarily to read the message, backwards, from inside the bridge.  Looking confused for a moment, he stopped, then quickly began plucking cups from the fencing.  A few moments later, he continued across the bridge, and happily stepped down the side street, looking back at his modifications:

Clearly, this naive individual is not from around here.

Crazy stuff

- I ran a 2-hour slog in the mountains last weekend during the heat of the day, and weighed myself before and after the run.  I found I had lost 4.4% of my body weight during the long climb and descent, despite drinking 12 ounces of water en route!

- In preparation for moving this weekend, I posted a few items on craigslist that I needed to get rid of so I can downsize a little.  2 of the 3 items sold and were picked up and gone within hours of posting -- one of them in less than 2 hours!  I love the internet.

- My running group crossed paths with a fat, disgruntled rattlesnake while running in the foothills last night!  Having heard the hissing/rattling sound only in movies before, it was highly unnerving and suprisingly loud.  Sounded like an old lawn sprinkler, except a lot more creepy.  He was about 2 inches in diameter, but coiled up, and colored sandy brown, with faint greyish-brown diamond-like patterns on his back.  He was upset because a mountain-biker ahead of us apparently had a death wish and was trying to shove him off the trail... with the front wheel of his bike!

- Medical treatment for rattlesnake bites can run higher than $20 grand!

When a person works an eight-hour day and receives a fair day's pay for his time, that is a wage.

When a person competes with an opponent and receives a trophy for his performance, that is a prize.

When a person receives appropriate recognition for his long service or high achievements, that is an award.

But when a person is not capable of earning a wage, can win no prize, and deserves no award, yet receives such a gift anyway ... this is what we mean when we talk about the grace of God.

(G. W. Knight)
